A Change of Direction

Motivation is a fickle lover.  I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my history with health, fitness and weight loss.  What it is that motivated me during those times when I was good about exercising every day?  What kept me on the path of a eating better during those times when eating better was my thing?  Why do I keep putting my emotional ups and downs on this blog for all to read?  Why aren’t they more interspersed with successes?

I’ve done an inventory recently, considering all of my past success and failure and I’ve come to the conclusion that I need to have purpose beyond simply losing weight in order to make this sustainable for me.  I need to have a purpose for writing here frequently that, while it includes my frustrations also includes a purpose beyond what I am feeling in the moment.

I have a plan!

Things around here will be changing in the very near future and I am SO EXCITED about the direction in which I will be taking this blog.

I will have more details coming up next week but am planning to include the following each month:

  • An intensive trial of a fitness program (local gym, online program, DVD, personal trainer, my work wellness program, aerobics programs, water aerobics programs, etc.) that will include at least 5-6 days of workouts, beginning and ending pictures, measurements, and weight, and a concluding summary listing the pro’s and con’s of the particular fitness plan from my perspective having done it for one month. For that month, my only intentional (non recreational) activity will be that program.
    • I would love to find a fitness challenge to conquer at the beginning and then at the end of each month that I could use to measure my progress as well–something like doing a 5K at the beginning and then again at the end of the month.
  • A monthly fitness, diet or health related book review.
  • My progress as I transition to a mostly whole foods, plant-based, oil free diet, including what I like, what I don’t like, recipes, recipe trial failures, cooking on a budget, etc.

My hope is that through this process I will not only find out what works best for me and best suits my current/changing circumstances and personality, but also provides some insight to my friends who might also be searching for the same.    It may be that I will find something after the first month or two that is really working for me and I will change my direction to include more than one month so that I can benefit from that momentum.  If that is the case, I will do more of a rotation or reviewing fitness aps and gadgets so that there is something new each month.
