In my last post I told you that I was considering a particular diet.  I’ve reviewed it and seriously considered it and I’ve decided to go another way.  That’s what this whole process is about…finding something that really resonates with my core convictions and what I know in my heart I should have been doing all along.

Now that you know what I’m not doing, you may be wondering what I will be doing?  Well, for starters, I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching and a lot of praying.  I’ve felt for a really long time like I need to focus my eating around a plant-strong diet–fruits, veggies, grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds–leaving the dairy and meat behind.  I’ve made attempts to eat this way before but I haven’t been 100% on board.  It can be really hard in social settings and it can be difficult when you eat out as much as I do.

Part of the impetus for me to make this change right now is that my blood pressure is high.  Off-the-charts high. Even on twice a day meds.  I’ve been taking blood pressure meds for a lot of years–probably 15.  About 18 months ago things seemed to be in control enough that I no longer needed the meds.  However, six months ago my blood pressure got really high.  and now even though I’ve been faithfully taking them it remains high.  Blood pressure is not necessarily the problem, but a symptom of the problem.

So over the past years I’ve done a lot of research, reading, watching of youtube videos, and experimenting.  I know what I need to do, I just need the courage to do it.

While I’m not quite ready to go into the details of everything that I am doing, I’ll start by saying that I’m doing my best to adopt a salt, oil, and sugar free vegan diet.  I believe, after taking all of my research into account, that this will be helpful in getting the blood pressure back where it needs to be.  Last week, with only about 70% compliance, I saw a significant reduction in my blood pressure.  I feel that this will be the answer for me.  I don’t think it will be easy, but I know that with God’s help and the support of my family and friends I will be able to make this work.

  1. Okay, I like this! The Lean & Free 2000 Plus was trail blazing and ground breaking 30 yeas ago (or so) and if you know it or remember, it included having a water, grain, vegetable, protein, and fruit for meals and vegetable-based snacks. BUT! We have learned a lot since then and I think the whole-food, plant-based thing is better. What I like about the LF one is eating more food to lose weight instead of starving and throwing our metabolism into famine mode. So, incorporating the frequent eating with the plant-based, whole food way makes a lot of sense.

    I especially love that you are so technological that you can put links in your posts! Takes me right to places. You Rock!
