The Gap

I am an amateur photographer.  I like to take pictures of people, places and things.  I love to capture a moment in time to be savored and remembered years later. It is a fun hobby.  I have the opportunity to network with some really fabulous photographers which often allows me to learn about things that I might otherwise miss.

Yesterday one of these acquaintances posted a video on facebook that has really had me thinking a lot about beauty, how we perceive our own beauty, and the difference between  how we see ourselves and how the world sees us.  In this video, this difference is referred to as “the gap.”  Here is the video:

Please take a few minutes to watch this video.  It is well worth your time.  I’d love it if you would share your thoughts on it with me here.  I think this is going to to be just the first of several posts on this subject.  It has touched me deeply and I thank Peter Hurley and Anna Rowley for their presentation and the profound affect I feel it will have on my life, finding my own beauty and allowing others to see it as well.

I’ve never been comfortable having my picture taken.  I remember how awkward I felt the last time I had to go to a professional studio and have a head shot taken for our work web site.  It was awful! In the video they talk about everyone having a gap between how we see ourselves and how the world sees us and that a camera lens shines a light on that gap and becomes an extension of our own inner critic.  That resonated with me!

Peter’s statement at the end of the film struck a chord with me.  He said, “For those of you that are having trouble seeing your own beauty, could you please just take a better look around for it and when you find it, allow us to see it too.”  I need to do this.  My bet is that you need to do this too.  Everyone I know that reads this blog is beautiful.  Everyone I know is beautiful. So many of us don’t realize it.  We don’t own it. We don’t allow others to see it.

I will be thinking about what I can do to really take a better look around for it.  I want to find a way to allow you to see it too.  Like I said….many more posts.

  1. I love this! Don’t have time right now to say anything, but I see ongoing conversation on this topic. Peter is my new boyfriend. My hand is raised! 😉
